“A New You in a New Year”
Sunday, January 3rd, 2021
Beginning a new year is always a time charged with new possibilities – a time to set new intentions – to capture a new vision – commit to new dreams. But you can’t have a new and different kind of life until you become a new you, a spiritual you. This is being born anew or born again
Jesus, in Jn3 told Nicodemus, “Unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God. What does it mean to be born again (or anew)? It means to give birth to your spiritual self. It means living from your Divine Mind or Christ Presence and calling it forth to take over and shine its light to lead you.
At the very start of the Bible, in Genesis 1 it states: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters.” Isn’t this our situation? Some aspect of our life is without form and void – and darkness is upon the face of the deep. Yet we must remember, God is always moving over the face of the waters.
There is a pearl of old Chinese wisdom, “the road turns with your feet.” This means you can’t really make a fatal mistake or error from which there is no recovery. No dead-end in life, because life goes on as long as you keep moving forward. You can learn from that decision and weave it into your wisdom. Rather than giving up, we can stay in the flow and keep going.
When we say someone is living from ‘personality,’ we mean they are living from their personal self, their ego-self. When a person is living from ‘individuality,’ it means they’re living from their Christ self. Our purpose is to live from ‘individuality’ in all areas of our life. Yet everyone is experiencing that they live from ‘personality’ in some part of their life. In that area (or those areas), the condition(s) is without form and void, with darkness upon the face of the deep. But even then, God is always at hand. Knowing this, we can always begin again.
We do so by admitting our personal powerlessness. We can join Jesus in saying, “Of myself, I can do nothing.” The personality self can do nothing.
But then, Jesus said, “It is not I, but the Father that dwells in me that does the work.” The individuality in me. Christ in me, the hope of glory.
We can all choose to start over, to begin again – and to be excited about the possibilities. There are large areas where each of us has limited ourselves, and we can choose to burst forth and allow our Spirit to soar. As we do so, life in the new year takes on a wonderful, whole new dimension.
